Fushimi Inari Taisha: getting there, the shrine's rules, and autumn festivals

Last checked against official sources: 26 September 2026
Short version. Take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station: the shrine is right outside, and it is five minutes from Kyoto Station. Don't drive; the roads around the shrine car park get very crowded. No drones, and no eating while you walk.

The shrine asks visitors to use public transport: the roads around its car park get very crowded. The car park is closed from 30 December to 6 January.

The shrine's rules

Fushimi Inari is a working shrine, and it publishes a list of things it asks visitors not to do. The main ones:

  • No drones or anything else flying.
  • Eat and drink only in the free rest areas, not while walking or standing on the paths.
  • No filming for business, no photos where photos are not allowed, and don't block the narrow paths while taking pictures.
  • No walks with dogs or other pets (assistance dogs are fine).
  • No wedding dresses or clothes that are not suitable for visiting a shrine.
  • No smoking, no climbing on lanterns, no entering buildings or roped-off areas, and no loud noise.

What the shrine does not publish

The shrine's official site does not list opening hours or an admission fee, and it does not give a walking time to the top of the mountain. We don't repeat numbers we could not check; ask at the shrine if you need them.
